Q.What is a decoction?
A decoction is a method in which to extract botanical compounds, water is boiled and plant materials are simmered in the water for 15+ minutes( depending on desired potency)
Q.How is it different from tea?
A. The general method to make tea is to steep the material for 2-5 minutes in water that has been removed from the heat, so water is actively cooling as it steeps.
A decoction utilizes the water as it continues to simmer on the heat source. This allows the water to extract more compounds, making it a more potent product than a tea extraction.
Q. What would happen if I prepared this blend with the tea method, instead of a DECOCTION?
A. Nothing negative would occur, the end product would just be less potent and you would need more to gain the desired results. There are some situations that a decoction would be too strong and the gentle composition of a tea extraction would be more appropriate.
Decoctions are perfect for herbs, roots (some seeds) and bark that are harder, ligneous/fibrous, woody. Ingredients that would otherwise not be broken down efficiently or fully by lower heat/ infusion methods.
